I first heard of the minimalist Challenge and minimalism back in May and jumped straight into the challenge. I was in nesting mode pre baby and wanted to declutter and make our home simpler. The experience doing it opened my eyes to just how much we have in our homes, even spaces we think aren’t that cluttered still have so much stuff in them. I wrote a post about doing the challenge in May here
With the summer given over to baby arriving and enjoying the newborn bubble I had planned on doing the challenge again in November. But with life throwing us the curveball of relocating I’m bringing it forward to September.
Since we are moving next month I want to declutter as much as possible! I don’t want to take items that we no longer need into our new home. I also don’t want to be paying for them to go into storage or for there to be more boxes than necessary to unpack. That’s all just more work and time!
The minimalist Challenge is really straightforward to do. So the normal premise is that the number of items you get rid of each day equals the date ie 4th-it’s 4 things, 5th is 5 things etc but since I’m on a real mission to declutter I’m doubling it!
So the 4th will be 8 items, 5th 10 items, 6th will be 12 items. By the end of the month we will be 930 items lighter. Let that sink in. 930.
And you know we won’t miss them.
Again I’m going to do a mixture of trash, recycling, donating and selling. Whatever feels right for the items. This is a great way to focus my decluttering efforts and feel like I’m making real progress!
So follow along during the month on Instagram and at the end of the month I’ll do another follow up post on how I found it and if I make it to 930 items.
Wish me luck!
